Pond and water feature installation and maintenance across Charlotte, NC since 2002.

The First Pond

Every backyard pond starts with a vision. For Dave Blocksom, that vision began in 1991 when he built his first water feature without knowing it would transform his life. His front yard pond became more than a hobby; it became a gathering place where friends and family experienced the calming sounds of flowing water and the joy of watching koi swim beneath lily pads. Neighbors would stop by to watch the waterfall. Kids pressed their faces close to see the fish dart between rocks. Dave didn’t just create a pond, he created memories.

Pam's Pond

Dave’s sister-in-law Pam, who lived in Denver, visited often and fell in love with the peaceful retreat Dave had created. When illness struck her life, Pam reached out with a simple request: “Build me a pond where I can heal.”

Dave traveled to Denver and spent three days crafting a custom stream and pond designed specifically for Pam’s recovery. She would sit by the water for hours, finding peace in nature’s rhythms.

One afternoon, Pam called Dave with a realization that would change everything. “I was about to go inside and watch my favorite show,” she told him, “but I asked myself, why would I leave this?” She told Dave, “You need to share what I have here with more people.”

That conversation sparked something in Dave. He realized backyard ponds weren’t just landscaping projects; they were healing spaces that transformed lives. With his wife Sally’s support, Dave founded Pondscapes of Charlotte in 2002.

Building Trust

Dave’s breakthrough came when the Charlotte Observer featured his story of leaving corporate America to pursue his passion for building natural water features. After the article ran, his phone started ringing. Families across Charlotte reached out to discuss their pond dreams, inspired by Dave’s journey and dedication to craftsmanship. Many of those original customers still trust Pondscapes for pond maintenance and upgrades more than 20 years later.

Award-Winning Pond Construction In Charlotte

In 2023, our Northwest-inspired pondless waterfall near Lake Wylie caught national attention when Pond Trade Magazine featured it on their cover and recognized it with the Water Artisan of the Year award for Best Pond Under $20K. That project proved what we’ve always believed: Charlotte families deserve high-end water features at honest, accessible prices. You can see the full transformation and read Mr. Tuttle’s story here.

But the real reward isn’t magazine covers or industry awards. It’s the stories our customers share with us. The grandfather who watches his grandkids catch their first glimpse of koi swimming under lily pads. The homeowner who chose to skip her evening TV show just to sit by her waterfall. The neighbor who stops by unannounced just to listen to the sound of flowing water.

In 2016, Aquascape recognized us with their CAC (Certified Aquascape Contractor) of the Year award for installation excellence and customer service. These recognitions push us to keep learning, refining our techniques, and raising our standards with every pond we build throughout Charlotte.
