The crew at Pondscapes of Charlotte always love adding new ponds and water features to our community. Sometimes, however, existing water features can be in need of a major reconstruction in order to get them functioning to their highest possible ability. In Winter of 2023, this was the exact case for one of our VIP customers. Her and her family became pond owners when they moved to a new home that had an existing water feature. This water feature was not built by Pondscapes of Charlotte but we had taken care of it in the past. After a few months of servicing this feature and reiterating the problems it had due to the way it was initially constructed, the client decided it was the right time to make the necessary improvements and Pondscapes of Charlotte got to work!
The major problem with this water feature was its lack of filtration. An old, severely warped skimmer and total lack of biofalls meant that there was very little surface area for any sort of beneficial bacteria to live and help clear the water. Additionally, the feature had undersized plumbing and the pond was V-shaped which meant rocks just fell in from the side and the fish had less room to swim around.
After removing the old skimmer, plumbing, rocks, and liner, we went to work re-digging the stream and the pond in order to shape them better and make them a little bigger. Putting down a new layer of underlayment underneath our new liner helped protect it. After attaching the new liner to the skimmer and biofalls, we started properly rocking the feature to get it looking nice. A smack hiccup occurred when heavy rains meant water got under he unfinished feature, but a bit of digging and pumping meant we were able to remove the water like it wasn’t even there.
We also made this feature extra special by adding a stone walkway going up the side of the feature so that it was easier to traverse for the client and her elderly parents. This way, everyone had a much safer and easier time enjoying the water feature as a family. We finished up the feature by mulching the area and making sure the water was nice and clear for the client and her family!
It was a great experience bringing this feature up to the standards that our clients deserve. Check out the video to watch this pond renovation from start to finish!
