Traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina my dad, The Top Frog, and I arrived in Panama City, Florida not to build a pond, but to build a small waterfall for my grandpa. He has been interested in making some landscape improvements to his backyard and together we decided a pondless waterfall would be just the thing he needed to bring his yard to life!
When we arrived we first determined the best location for the waterfall. There was a natural area inbetween three palm trees that was in the center location of the yard. We choose this area because it would allow the waterfall to be viewed from multiple different spots inside as well as outside the house.
The stone we used to build the waterfall was different then the boulders we use building ponds back at home. We had consulted with experts in Panama City, Florida who told us where we could find the best stone at the best price to build our waterfall. The pondless waterfall was designed the same way we build them in Charlotte, NC using the Aquascape inc. system and products we were able to create something that not only looked great but was functional!
Some of the differences in building a water feature in Florida then at home were the soil conditions. In Charlotte, we are use to digging in red clay but in Florida we were digging in sand! This made it very easy to dig but during our excavation we had to dig thru palm tree roots. Even so the roots were not to difficult to dig through and overall was much easier to dig then back at home. The final result turned out better then expected. My grandfather loves his new waterfall and the views from the back patio and inside the house make it so wherever he is he can enjoy it!
It is always fun doing travel projects with my dad. Be sure to check out the pond we built for capybaras in Texas for The Urban Rescue Ranch.
